Choosing the wrong licence is the most common early mistake in a UAE free zone setup. In Ajman Free Zone the licence is tied to the activity you will actually carry out, so the first decision is what your company does. This guide explains the four licence types the Authority lists and who each one suits.

The four Ajman Free Zone licence types
- Commercial licence: trading, import, export and distribution of goods.
- Professional licence: consulting, advisory and other services.
- Industrial licence: manufacturing, production and processing.
- Freelance licence: independent professionals offering specialised services.
Which one fits which business?
A company that buys and sells physical products needs a commercial licence. A consultancy, agency or advisory firm needs a professional licence. A business that makes or processes goods needs an industrial licence. An individual working alone as a specialist may fit the freelance licence instead of forming a company.
How the activity decides the licence
The Authority states that the licence category depends on the activities the company will perform. If your business mixes two things, for example selling products and providing services, check whether one licence can cover both or whether you need separate arrangements. Our guide to choosing business activities in Ajman Free Zone explains how to check this before applying.
Trading licence or professional licence?
If you sell goods you hold or ship, you are trading. If you earn fees for advice or work, you are providing services. Many small firms do both, and this is where advice helps most. Read more in our guide to the Ajman Free Zone trading licence.
