Iraq Business Visa: Requirements, Invitation Letter and Common Mistakes

Last updated: October 2026

Iraq does not hand out business visas casually. Approval rests with the Iraqi authorities, and applications that arrive with missing or mismatched documents are the ones that get delayed or refused. This guide explains what business visitors are usually asked for, using the requirements published by the German-Iraqi chamber (AHK Iraq) as a worked example. Your embassy or consulate may ask for more or less, so always confirm with it directly.

What a business visa application usually includes

  • A completed and printed application form.
  • A colour copy of your passport. AHK Iraq states the passport must be valid for at least six months and have at least one blank page.
  • Passport photographs.
  • A medical certificate.
  • An invitation letter from the relevant ministry or company in Iraq.
  • The consular fee, which differs by embassy and is set locally.

The invitation letter is the document that decides most cases

The invitation tells the authorities who you are visiting, why, for how long and who is responsible for you in Iraq. A vague or generic letter is the most common reason business applications stall. It should name your company and the Iraqi host, state the purpose of the trip (a meeting, a site visit, an exhibition, contract negotiations), give the dates, and come from an organisation the authorities can identify. AHK Iraq notes that acceptance or rejection is decided solely by the Iraqi Ministry of Interior in Baghdad, so the embassy cannot promise an outcome.

Where you apply matters

Embassies often expect you to apply from your country of residence. AHK Iraq’s guidance for applicants in Germany says that applicants who are not German citizens need a copy of a German residence permit or must apply in their home country. If you live in the UAE, Saudi Arabia or Pakistan, check which Iraqi mission handles your nationality and residence status.

Common mistakes to avoid

  1. Applying with a passport that has less than six months’ validity.
  2. Submitting an invitation letter that does not match the purpose or dates on the form.
  3. Booking flights and meetings before the visa is granted.
  4. Assuming the rules for one nationality or one embassy apply to another.
  5. Sending documents in the wrong format or leaving out the medical certificate.

Frequently asked questions

How long does an Iraq business visa take?

It depends on the embassy, your nationality and how complete your file is. Ask the mission for its current processing time and plan travel only after approval.

Who can issue the invitation letter?

Typically an Iraqi ministry or a registered Iraqi company that you are meeting. Letters from an organisation the authorities cannot verify are more likely to be questioned.

Is the Kurdistan Region different?

Entry arrangements for the Kurdistan Region are managed separately from federal Iraq, so check the rules for the region you are travelling to rather than assuming one visa covers both.
